Purchased from Morphy Auctions (reported). Acquired within the last five years (reported). The owner states this figure appears on the cover of a book about Mexican carousel carvers, authored by someone phonetically rendered as "March Swinson" in the transcript (reported — see Open Questions). "This is Mighty Mouse. It's a children's size piece, and it is on the cover… of Mexican carvers" (reported).

Pre-auction provenance is unknown. As with #019, the Morphy Auctions catalog for this lot, once retrieved, may contain consignor information, lot description, and sale date. The figure's style and the owner's reference to a book on Mexican carvers place it within the tradition of Mexican fairground figure carving.

Mexican carousel carvers produced a distinctive body of work throughout the twentieth century, including unlicensed folk interpretations of popular cartoon characters for children's fairground rides. These figures were hand-carved in wood and painted in bold, direct colors for outdoor use. They represent a separate carving tradition from both the American and European carousel schools, with their own aesthetic conventions — simplified forms, bright primary palettes, and a cheerful disregard for anatomical fidelity that gives the figures their particular charm (inferred from photographic evidence and the Mel Birnkrant Collection documentation).

Cartoon character carousel figures — from multiple national traditions including Mexican, French, and Belgian — are a recognized collecting subcategory. The Mel Birnkrant collection, one of the most extensively documented private collections of this material, includes multiple character figures from European carousels, some with documented maker's plaques (sourced: melbirnkrant.com). Auction records on LiveAuctioneers show carved wood cartoon mouse carousel figures selling in the range of several hundred to several thousand dollars, depending on condition, provenance, and character identification (sourced: LiveAuctioneers).

The nose hole visible in the close-up photographs is a notable detail. Some carousel figures — particularly from the French tradition — incorporated bellows or whistle mechanisms that produced sounds during the ride. Whether this feature is present in the Mexican carving tradition is an open research question.

This figure represents an unusual addition to the collection — it is the only character-based or cartoon-derived figure documented thus far, and the only piece with a confirmed Mexican attribution.

The figure shows extensive paint wear throughout, consistent with prolonged outdoor fairground use. The yellow trousers show significant chipping and flaking, revealing bare wood and earlier paint layers beneath. The red jacket/vest area has lost substantial surface paint, exposing a dark underlayer. The blue shoes show wear. The pink face retains more paint but has visible chips, particularly around the nose and cheek areas. A structural crack is visible at the head-to-body joint. The circular ears are intact but show paint loss. The wood surface is rough and weathered in exposed areas. The figure retains the character and patina of a working fairground object.

Formal condition rating: Fair — structurally intact but with heavy paint wear, visible cracking, and exposed wood throughout. Unrestored.

Medium. The Mexican attribution is supported by the owner's reference to a book on Mexican carvers and by the carving style, which is consistent with documented Mexican fairground figure production. The Morphy Auctions provenance is confirmed. The specific character identification and the book reference are unresolved.
